Explanation writing 26-11-2015

Bees have been around much longer than you have. They are ancient. Bees have existed for millions of years but not just known as honey bees. They are scientifically known as Apis mellifera which means “Honey-carrying bee.” As Well as that it is the only insect that produces food eaten by man. Honey. Do you know how bees make honey or anything about bees? We didn’t until we learnt this.

All of the honey begins in a field, where worker honey bees extract nectar from the flowers. Next they store the honey in their honey sacs, then they returned to bee headquarters. The other worker bees chew the honey, breaking down the honeys complex sugars. The two sugars are called glucose and fructose. They deposit the nectar into the cells of the wax honey comb they’ve built. They fan it with their wings until most of the watery contents evaporates, in the warm air of the beehive. All that remains is thick and gooey honey.

If bees are taken by a jolt they will sting. The way a beekeeper overcomes this, is by spraying the hive with smoke from piping-hot burning pine needles. It’s a scented warning, to the bees, that foreigners are about to enter their colony. Inside, side by side, there are hanging frames each holding a honey comb. The beekeeper will now trick the colonies defenders, then replaces the hives cover with something that is called the “bee escape” that smells like cherries. But because this insect dosen’t like this smell most of them go to the bottom. It takes another warning spray then the beekeeper can escape with the honeycombs.

All descendants of the prolific grand of the pooba beedom the queen. 200 eggs, per day, will be laid by the queen bee creating the workforce needed to feed and protect the colony.Hundreds and thousands of bee could be in the hive at once.

Inside the factory of honey they put the honey comb frames on what's called an uncapping machine like a razor, It slashes wax caps off the honey filled cells of the combs. They scrape off the leftovers manually. Then they set the frames on another machine called the honey extractor it spins the honey combs until all the honey is forced out of the cells.Afterwards they filter the honey to remove any pieces of waxed capping that slip through. Then the honey ready for bottling

Certain beehives contain shorter frames designed to produce honey that isn’t extracted from the honeycomb. Workers have the frames removed with a heated knife and cut the honeycomb into pieces. They seal the wax and eat it wax and all.The lining of the beeswax can be made into other things like lipsticks, furniture, polish and other products.

Here are some questions we asked Di Rensen for some facts and about her experience with Bees.!

What is the most difficult part of being a beekeeper?
The heavy lifting! When the bees have gathered their honey they put it in the Honey Box (known as a super) and it can weigh up to 25kg... It's very hard work taking honey boxes off.

What is your favorite part of your job?
Being outside in the sun and hanging out with my bees.

How many times have you been stung?
Ooh... Lots and lots!! I don't have much of a reaction to stings..unlike my husband who swells up really badly!

How many bees do you see everyday?
Close to a million.  There is roughly 60000 bees in a good hive.
Do you have a favorite fact about bees? If so what is it?
If the Queen dies, the bees can make a new Queen!

Around how much honey do you get a day?
The 'honey flow' is only about 6 weeks long.. But if it's a strong flow and a strong hive the bees can fill a super in a couple of days!

What about how you collect it?
We just take the honey boxes off the hive, make sure no bees are in them and bring them back to base to either go through the messy process of uncapping frames and spinning honey out or sending boxes away for someone else to do.

So as you see bees are incredible creatures. From worker bees that suck the nectar, to the Queen bee who makes the colony. So just remember that the excess honey that isn't scraped off by a machine is scraped off manually and that bees will sting if taken by surprise. We hope you know more about these creatures from the pooba beedom.

Tangaroa sea 10-11-15

Sea turtle writing 10-11-15

Over 150 million years ago, along with the dinosaurs, there lived a species of sea turtles.  They have managed to survive longer than many other animals from the Jurassic period.  However, only 10% of sea turtles live to breeding age.  Now that humans have come along, only 1% of all sea turtles survive to breed the new generation of baby sea turtles.

The first set ,of the sea turtles life cycle, is when they hatch out of eggs. Their mother has laid 50 - 200, leathery ping-pong ball, sized eggs. It takes ,roughly, a month and a half before they hatch. Sadly 20% ,will never hatch. Each of the sea turtles are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.  From there, they immediately face many challenges. Such as:

-the repelling force of the curunce
-crabs,seagulls,
raccoons
-human interference

and others. While making a dash for the ocean, only 50% of those will survive.

The 50% that get into the water have to rummage along the ocean top and find a patch of seaweed to hide under. They will do this for several months to avoid all their predators. To survive through this difficult for them. The causes are weather,
Other animals and unfortunate currents. 50% of those will miserably perish.

As they develop they will get from the size, of a dinner plate at year one, to a dinner table when they're adults. Which is about a decade or so for that species. When they become fully developed they get some measure of protection. The only predators now are some of the larger sharks species. For example bulls and whites. There are also the occasional killer whale.

Approximately two decades of age, the mothers are able to Lay eggs and continue the cycle in which their species depends on.

Those that began as eggs now less than 10% remain, But that is only without human interference. In the last centuries, in particular the last couple decades humans have done many things to our ocean.
For example:
-beach development
-plastic refuse
-poaching
-long line
-nets
-noxious chemicals including oils
which has upped the ante for sea turtles. As a consequence sea turtles survival rate has dropped to one persent. They have overcome many obstacles but this has happened so quickly it has overwhelmed the species. Do everything you can to help this species from becoming extinct!

Zoo letter About red panda - Bo

Room 2AM
Kestrel block
Pinehill School
Browns bay
Auckland

Thursday 3 September

Dear Zoo Keeper,

The reason I am writing to you is that I would greatly appreciate if i could offer my opinion about my enclosure.

I am super ecstatic that i have towering trees surrounding me.  When i climb up the dominant tree, in sight the zoo is beautiful.

You coming to visit me and giving me food is the highlight of my day.  The food is scrupulous.

I'm very glad I have a place to sleep because the ground doesn't look very comfortable.

However, there are some things that would be amazing if you tweaked.

For example, I don’t have much shelter.  Its very irritating when it rains.  Sadly, it puts me in a bad mood.

Also, I find my enclosure is very miniscule, if i compare it to the wild, where i would usually be.  It forces me to go insane and run in circles.

Although there are those things, there are also some wonderful things about the zoo, so thank you.  Image result for auckland zoo red panda enclosureImage result for auckland zoo red panda enclosure

Love you,
Bo

Around Pinehill senses writing BC

One chilly morning, a hard court was in sight, with faded, yellow lines. Above appeared a metal hoop, that basketballs go through as fast as lightning ,and different trees becoming denuded, surrounded it. It is beautiful. As I strolled around groups of sparrows jumped all about, as fast as a kid on a sugar rush. It is a very sweet sound. The sun shone bright over a colorful playground where kids giggle all day and had lots of fun! I can hear the loud rumble of a big engine as it zooms past me. It is all very beautiful!

Compare a character with someone you know

I think that my friend Jasmine would be a great comparison with Gregory Heffley (even though he is a boy) because she is always trying to find new ways to do things just like the main character Gregory Heffley.

Reading Activity 27/5/2015

Which Character in the story would you omitted and why?

Omitted - means take away a character in the story

I think that I would omitted Christopher because he is not a main part in the story.

Name and describe the main character in your story

The main character in Diary Of A Wimpy Kid is Gregory Heffley. He is about 12 years old. He is a boy with two brothers and he is the middle child. This is how i would describe Gregory Heffley in three words...
1. creative
2. humorist
3. interesting because of all his ideas

What if it was your birthday everyday

I think...
that it wouldn't be as special. Because usually it would be once a year and you would be waiting. That night before your birthday is one of the best night when your all excited and you just to try and think about something else so you could go to sleep. Another reason is that it would be very expensive for the adults and it would be very hard having to buy presents for everyone everyday. You would have to wake up early everyday because it was your birthday. THATS IMPOSSIBLE. It would get kind of boring because it will just turn into a regular thing that everyday you get things.

That is the bad reasons now for the good reasons.

For the good reasons it would be awesome (in a way). You would get presents everyday and that means you will have to have a really big room for all your things. You would never have to say " oh I wish I had this" because you most likely have already. You would never get bored because have so much to do.

But over all I think that we should stick with one birthday a year. You won't get as many presents as you would if your birthday was everyday. I still think it would be better and I am glad we only have one birthday.

camp posters

Today was the last day to finish our posters to put on the wall of our camp cabin windows. At first I was super relax and then it came to the last ten minutes. I freaked. I thought we had at least another half hour or so. I guess it’s not over till the fat lady sings. It was time to rush. Alice and I were colouring so fast our hands were getting cramps. Then it happened. The worst thing that had happened the whole day. It was all over. Miss Wilson yelled “Everybody come sit down.” I was devastated. We hadn't got our poster finished. I thought we were going to be in so much trouble for not finishing in time. I begged Miss McNae for another ten minutes or so. She said we could work on it at camp.
“But that's so far away!”
“it will have to do,” said Miss McNae “Now go sit down.”I sat down feeling like I had just let my whole team down.

(Even though I didn’t)

To be continued...

What if animals could talk?

What if animals could talk?

If animals could talk I think that it would be good and bad for different situations. It would be good because your pet(s) would be able to tell you things that they needed like if they wanted a drink or if your pet really badly needed to go to the bathroom. It would save them a lot of stress.

It would also be good because you could be best friends with your pet. You could talk and do a bunch of things together! That means that your pet can come to school with you and learn. But your pet would win cross country by miles.

Review of my first week of school

My first week of school

Aerobics
In my first week of school my favourite thing was dong aerobics everyday for all the different houses. I like aerobics because it's very energetic and I love dancing.

House Captain
Right now I am so excited and super nervous for the opportunity as house captain. I have already finished my speech and I am practicing it every night. I'm not sure if I will win or not but I hope that I do! But their is a lot of compitition. Being house captain has been my dream every since I saw other house captain doing great jobs and being a great leader. Our first P.E. class was squash with Manu. He thought I was good and asked if I played tennis and I said I used to. I think that I was really good at bouncing the ball on the squash racket. I thought that it was really fun.

Music
At our first music class we meet Miss DC. I thought that she was really nice. She told us she moved a lot through out our life.
